SummaryThis position is above the full performance level for
Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound). The
technician performs a full range of procedures, including complex
examinations without standard instructions, and works independently
during evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call shifts. The
incumbent is also responsible for staff development and
training.Qualifications Basic Requirements:
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
Non-citizens may be appointed if qualified citizens cannot be
recruited, in accordance with chapter 3 - section A - paragraph 3g.
Education: No specific educational
requirements; substitutions are possible at GS-4 and GS-5 levels.
Refer to the grade requirements section for details.
Licensure or Certification: Not
required but highly desirable at GS-6 or above. Specific
certifications may be required for certain specialties or
supervisory roles. Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support
certifications are also desirable.
Physical Requirements: Refer to VA
Directive and Handbook 5019.
English Language Proficiency: Must be
proficient in spoken and written English.
Grade Requirements: The occupation is
grouped into seven functional areas. Diagnostic Ultrasound
Technicians operate ultrasonic equipment for diagnostic purposes.
Registration is offered by CCI or ARDMS. Creditable experience
involves knowledge and application of current practices, with
experience crediting based on hours worked relative to a full-time
schedule.
GS-9 Level: Requires at least 1 year
of experience at the next lower grade, demonstrating comprehensive
knowledge of ultrasonography, including complex procedures,
supervisory or lead roles, and the ability to manage and train
staff. Certification by CCI or ARDMS, and BCLS/ACLS certifications
are highly desirable. Higher-level duties must constitute at least
25% of the incumbent's time. Non-supervisory special assignments
that exceed full performance level responsibilities are limited and
reviewed by the Professional Standards Board.Duties
- Perform complex ultrasound examinations across various systems
and procedures.
- Transport, position, and prepare patients for ultrasound
procedures, including selecting technical factors based on
individual patient needs.
- Consult with clinicians, gather clinical data, interpret
images, and select images for documentation.
- Assist with interventional biopsies and ensure image quality
and proper documentation.
- Maintain ultrasound records, schedule exams, and ensure a
clean, stocked work environment.
- Perform computer-related tasks, contribute to quality
assurance, and participate in research and case studies.
- Provide training and guidance to staff, students, and
residents; establish protocols with physicians.
- Participate in on-call or standby duties for 24/7
coverage.
- Educate patients and families about ultrasound procedures, and
perform clerical duties as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned.Work Schedule: Varies,
including weekdays, weekends, days, and evenings. Telework is not
